Visual Enquiry User-Oriented System

Objetivo

Corporate information systems have developed gradually over the last few years, according to the evolution of the market and the capabilities provided by the technology. As a result, a typical information system is frequently composed of a number of different databases, organised according to diverse technologies, based on heterogeneous products, and often distributed across different equipment. Such a situation creates significant barriers to the availability of the information to the end-user, who is faced with a variety of query languages and databases structured in dissimilar ways. To obtain the requested data, they need to know the actual physical organisation of a database as well as needing to use query languages that vary with different products.

To facilitate the task of end-users in accessing and retrieving the information they require, the VENUS project aims to develop the prototype of a unified query system that provides a common integrated interface to diverse information sources.
The aim of the project is to develop the complete prototype of graphical user interface to multimedia, distributed and heterogeneous data. The VENUS graphic interface is based on a conceptual representation of the data itself (through icons and diagrams), making its physical implementation and management totally transparent to the user. The system will represent a valuable contribution to the needs of various business environments. Typical scenarios can be identified in hospitals, transport, information brokers, government organizations and bibliographical databases. A working prototype has been developed that represents the basis for subsequent work within the project. This prototype is currently being experimented and demonstrated in the live environment of different business organizations, so as to verify the response of the system with the actual user requirements.
The project is mainly based on the exploitation of the results of the KIM (5638) exploratory action, and will evolve them towards the prototype of a complete query system that can be installed on top of several systems currently used for the management of both structured data and extended types of information, such as texts and images.

The system will be based on an open architecture and on the industrial Unix and MS-DOS standards. It will provide diagrammatic and iconic interfaces, enabling the user to identify, select and retrieve information of interest from heterogeneous and distributed databases in a uniform manner, independent of the specific underlying database models, languages and systems.

The consortium includes software houses, manufacturers and actual users. This organisation permits the early validation and the incremental optimisation of the adopted solutions through installing and experimenting with the VENUS system in the real-life (hospital and office) environments of the participating users organisation. By also exploiting the results of KIM, promotions, presentations and workshops will be organised from the early phases involving external organisations; this will widely verify the adopted approach as well as creating the basis for subsequent industrial exploitation.
