Solutions for locating mobile elements
The location of mobile elements, such as persons or means of transport, is of great interest for many economic activities and is especially relevant in sectors such as logistics and the transport of goods. The problem of locating depends a great deal on the characteristics of the scenarios to be controlled and, to this end, solutions are based on the application of different technologies for different surroundings and environments. Thus, in open environments the use of GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems) may be sufficient in most cases and provide a good basis for the definition of services of value, such as traceability or assistance for drivers in transit. However, in closed or shaded environments, where there is no GNSS cover, solutions for locating may turn out to be very diverse. In TIMI (TECNALIA in collaboration with Ingeteam) the Zigbee technology is being experimented with, and which has proved to give acceptable solutions for some of these environments. Artificial vision combined with active RFID technology is another of the research fields of the project (in which TECNALIA is taking part with Acciona Transmediterránea). This combination provides solutions applicable to both open and closed environments. In these cases, the visual information from the cameras is added to by the identification data detected by RFID antennae, generally located in zones of special interest. In this way, a greater knowledge of the mobile elements in the surroundings is computed, and this serves as a basis for the detection of alarms or anomalous situations arising in certain scenarios.
