Four new projects for CREATE-NET under H2020

The research centre CREATE-NET is proud to announce the granting of a number of European funding for a total of EUR 1.5 million within the framework of the programme 'Horizon 2020'.

H2020 is one of the five flagship initiatives of the strategy 'Europe 2020' to ensure the global competitiveness of Europe. This initiative represents the main instrument of the European Union for research funding for the period 2014 - 2020. Research and innovation in the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) are an important part of this investment, the purpose of which is to to exploit emerging technologies to address the challenges related to scientific excellence, industrial leadership and welfare for the society. CREATE-NET is at the forefront in research and innovation in ICT since the beginning of its activities in 2003 in Trentino. CREATE-NET participated in the first calls of H2020 in the course of 2014, within the challenges of 'Leadership in Enabling and Industrial Technologies'. It is in this context that the centre has been granted European funding of EUR 1.5 million due to its involvement in four projects that deal with ICT topics including the Internet of Things (Internet of Things), the networks softwarization (SDN - Software-Defined networks) and the network functions virtualisation (NFV - network functions virtualisation). In particular, the research centre will be entrusted with the scientific coordination of two projects: VITAL (VIrtualized hybrid satellite-TerrestriAl systems for resilient and fLexible future networks) and ACINO (Application Centric IP/Optical Network Orchestration) both in the SDN / NFV field. The first project aims at combining Terrestrial and Satellite networks to realise Satellite Virtual Network Operators (SVNOs), by pursuing two key innovation areas, bringing Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) into the satellite domain by developing tools and interfaces to establish end-to-end virtualised satellite networks, and by enabling Software-Defined-Networking (SDN)-based, federated resources management leveraging a unified control plane in hybrid Satellite-terrestrial networks. The project ACINO instead wants to develop a new model of network "centered on the application" and implement it through an SDN controller capable of managing transport networks in medium and long distance. The purpose is to offer to applications in the business greater programmability and dynamic network. This will allow, for example, the so-called cloud network operators (such as Google, Yahoo, Amazon, Facebook) or operators of supercomputers distributed in different sites to easily manage and protect large amounts of data through operations such as migrating virtual machines or backup data (such as financial data or sensitive data from users of a social network). CREATE-NET in cooperation with outstanding partners such as ATOS, KDDI, Trilogis and others, will work on the projects iKaaS (Intelligent Knowledge-as-a-Service) and UNCAP (Ubiquitopus Interoperable Care for Ageing People) for the development of solutions for smart cities and health of citizens that leverage on technologies and devices connected to the Internet of things.
