A new study of the current situation in European aeronautical research and technology acquisition concludes that there are serious deficiencies in this sector when compared to the USA and that the technology base available to European manufacturers will become increasingly competitively inadequate. According to the study, in order to improve and strengthen the European position, governments, the Commission, industry and the research community need to pool their efforts to develop high-level strategies. The development of long-term plans at national and European levels to sustain a strong technology base with appropriate collaborative European programmes as well as the establishment of a strong European Research Focus to coordinate actions, is also urgently recommended.
