OFELIA OpenFlow Facility Now Open For Experiments

Researchers Are Invited To Use The Unique Experimental Facility For Future Internet Research Based On OpenFlow Technology

The EU-funded project OFELIA announces the public availability for experiments of its European network facility based on OpenFlow technology. Any user accepting the usage policy is welcome to experiment on the OpenFlow-enabled testbed offered at five facilities in Europe. Usage of the OFELIA facility is provided as a free-of-charge best-effort service. The OFELIA project has created a unique experimental facility that allows researchers to not only experiment “on” a test network but to control and extend the network itself precisely and dynamically. The OFELIA facility is based on OpenFlow, a currently emerging networking technology that allows virtualization and control of the network environment through secure and standardized interfaces. OpenFlow separates control and forwarding planes, enabling users to program their networks by extending the network controller. Five facilities (also called OFELIA islands) offering an OpenFlow infrastructure are available to do experimentation on multi-layer and multi-technology networks. The experimentation space allows for flexible integration of test and production traffic by isolating the traffic domains inside the OpenFlow enabled network equipment. Based on OpenFlow 1.0 OFELIA offers a private test environment for the development and testing of new network applications. It integrates OpenFlow-enabled hardware devices of various vendors (e.g. NEC, ADVA) and sets of virtual machines for traffic generation. The OFELIA facility enables network research by deploying different network topologies. With this public offer, OFELIA concludes its first development phase by making five facilities in Ghent (Belgium), Berlin (Germany), Zurich (Switzerland), Colchester (UK), and Barcelona (Spain) available for experiments. In the next phase, OFELIA’s facilities will be interconnected to a single network distributed across Europe. The connectivity between the islands will be based on Gbit/s Ethernet tunnels. This second phase will then enable experiments spanning two or more islands.The project OFELIA is funded within the 7th Research Framework programme of the European Community.
