Engineers and medical experts will join forces in Barcelona, Spain, between 29 May and 2 June 1999 at "ESEM 99" - the fifth conference of the European Society for Engineering and Medicine (ESEM). Entitled "Bridging the two millenniums", the conference aims to help establish a platform of cooperation between medicine and engineering on a European basis. The ESEM believes this is vital in today's culture of highly technological multidisciplinary health care. The conference will review technological progress made during this millennium. Each of the three days will be devoted to discussions of specific organs and functions. The conference will be split into vertical segments for medical topics and horizontally for the technologies, in order to foster networking among physicians, engineers and industry representatives. The ESEM aims to contribute to the promotion of European Union programmes in the fields of engineering and medicine, and to participate in specific education and training courses for European engineers and health care workers.
