Organization of advanced study courses in marine science and technology
The Commission (DG XIII/D-3) has issued a call for proposals in the context of the specific research and technological development programme in the field of marine science and technology (MAST II), 1990-1994. The call concerns the organization of advanced study courses during 1995 in marine science and technology for young scientists and/or graduate students. The specific topics of the courses must fall into one of the following disciplines which are those of main interest to the MAST programme: - Physical oceanography; - Biological oceanography; - Chemical oceanography; - Marine geosciences; - Coastal zone science and engineering; - Marine instrumentation; - Marine generic technologies. The main objectives of the courses are to further advanced education on specific topics at the forefront of scientific and technological development in Europe, to exploit the wide-ranging teaching capabilities of European institutions for transnational education, and to improve communication between students and scientists on a European level. The courses may be, but do not need to be, linked to MAST funded research. If appropriate, they can be concerned with particular areas (e.g. the Mediterranean, the Baltic, the Northeast Atlantic, the Arctic Ocean), or with the ocean in general. Courses should be residential, of 2-3 weeks duration, and should be organized in a European institute having some experience of running advanced training courses. The organizer should be a scientist who is expert in the field of the training course. Speakers should be established scientists from the Community, from EFTA countries, or any other country with an excellent reputation in their specific field. Proposals must include speakers from at least three European countries. The total budget available will not exceed ECU 400,000. More detailed information on the form and content of the proposal can be obtained on written request: Commission of the European Communities DG XII/D-3 MAST Programme Attn.
