The European Commission (Directorate-General for Industry) has issued a call for proposals for Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) development projects under the Trade Electronic Data Interchange Systems (TEDIS) programme. Community financial support is available for projects focused on one a number of tasks designed to improve the situation in Europe in the following fields: - In the standardization area, there is a need to encourage European user groups to migrate from proprietary standards to UN/EDIFACT and associated European Norms; - In the telecommunications sector the aim is to launch a strategic study addressing the conditions for successful implementation of the memorandum of understanding on EDI registration procedures; - A companion objective to the above is to determine, through another strategic study, the conditions of generalization of new EDI applications based on ISDN and their impact on the European telecommunication service industry; - In the legal area, the objective is first to consolidate the results already obtained in the course of previous investigations to provide a coherent approach to harmonization, and secondly to propose the guidelines for the European harmonization of laws in order to support the use of EDI in Europe; - In the field of EDI security, there is a need to consider the security related to Interactive or Quick Response EDI and also to promote and discuss, in a dedicated workshop, EDI Trusted Third Party services and Certification Authorities (Pan-European multi-sectoral projects have already made some progress but the creation of new projects or the continuation of previous initiatives must be encouraged); - To raise awareness of the potential benefits of EDI in Europe, the coordination of awareness centres and the level of service offered must be increased. Proposals may be given partial or full funding as appropriate. Each applicant may submit one or more proposals. If several applicants submit a joint proposal, one must be designated as prime contractor.
