Transport RTD under the Fourth Framework Programme
On 10 March 1994, the Commission released an outline of each of the specific programmes within the Fourth Framework Programme. These include an overview of the aims and objectives of RTD to be undertaken in transport: This sector has grown rapidly during the last few years. In order to meet the growth in demand, at the same time improving the quality of life in the Member States and protecting the environment, the European Union has established a policy aiming to integrate each form of transport in a coherent whole. The transport programme: The implementation of a high-performance, trans-European network should facilitate the movement of goods and individuals and contribute to economic growth and employment. Research actions will concern the global network and each of its elements: - "Strategic research for a multimodal trans-European network", to support the creation of a network increasing the compatibility of different modes of transport (both between modes and geographically, between Member States) and to support the development of infrastructures; - "Network optimization", to contribute to the development of each of the individual modes of transport (rail, air, city, road, sea and waterways), particularly to improve safety and efficiency. Socio-economic impact and technological risk assessment will be undertaken. The participation of small and medium-sized enterprises will also be encouraged.
