Within the framework of the THERMIE programme, a workshop on energy efficient and environmentally sound glass melting processes was held on 25 June 1993 in Venice. The workshop focused on energy and environmental aspects related to SMEs and comprised the following subjects: - Presentation of the study "Energy efficient techniques in domestic glass production"; - A discussion of problem areas and barriers to the introduction of improved energy efficient technologies for glass melting in SMEs; - A recommendation for further action within the THERMIE programme. The report on the workshop indicates that although some useful technical means of saving energy and reducing emissions were presented, in general the technologies described in the workshop were only available to SMEs to a limited degree. Financing the invention of efficient technologies was also seen as a problem for SMEs, due to the long pay-back period and the energy costs of hand-made domestic glass.
