The Commission has adopted a Directive on the deliberate release into the environment of genetically modified organisms. On the basis of the experience gained with the release of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), the information requirements for deliberate release of GMOs into the atmosphere have been adapted. Annex II of the original Directive (90/220/EEC of 23.4.1990) is now divided into two sub-annexes: Annex II A outlines the information required in the notification concerning releases of GMOs other than higher plants, and Annex II B outlines the information required in the notification concerning releases of genetically modified higher plants. Member States are required to comply with this Directive by 30 June 1994.
