The European Union and China have concluded four cooperation agreements, which were signed on 7 May 1996 by Sir Leon Brittan, Commissioner responsible for relations with China, and Mr. Sun Zhenyu, Vice-Minister in the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation. The agreements cover cooperation in the following areas: - Training in intellectual property rights (IPRs); - Higher education and universities; - Technical and commercial cooperation in the dairy sector; - Water buffalo development project. Cooperation in training and IPRs will promote internationally accepted standards of IPR protection. Higher education and universities' cooperation aims at furthering human resource development in China and will provide for collaborative research projects between the two sides. Technical and commercial cooperation will improve production efficiency and quality in modernizing large State-owned dairy corporations. The water buffalo development project aims at improving the genetic make-up of buffaloes.
