The Environment Institute at Ispra, one of the seven Institutes of the European Commission's Joint Research Centre, has published its Annual Report for 1995. The report summarizes the Institute's most significant achievements during 1995, which was also the first year of implementing the Fourth RTD Framework Programme. The activities of the Institute's various units and their related programmes have been grouped into three major areas: - Levels and fates of chemicals; - Exposure to chemicals and their effects; - Consumer protection. Emphasis is given to the new competitive actions undertaken by the Institute and its success rate in bidding for shared-cost actions. Since the Institute's main customer is Commission Directorate-General XI (Environment, Nuclear Safety and Civil Protection), the continuing scientific and technical support given to Community polices is also underlined. The work done for third parties, the relevant exploratory research activities and participation in EUREKA projects are also described in the context of the relevant thematic areas.
