Stand-alone workstations for third countries
Within the framework of scientific and technical cooperation with third countries, a project being undertaken by the Commission of the European Communities, Directorate-General XIII/B, involves the installation of a number of stand-alone workstations in China, India and Tunisia. Aims of this project are to create awareness of the potential of electronic information services and to provide offline training in access to online services. A self-teaching package will be delivered with the workstation and on-site training in operation provided, as well as an accompanying manual. The package deals with information technology in general (online, videotex, audiotex and CD-ROM) and introduces online information retrieval using Common Command Language (CCL). A local database management system included in the workstation enables experience to be gained in the principles of basic database management, as well as local exploitation of databases implemented when the workstation is delivered and updated regularly on diskette.
