The second European Commission conference on research for the protection of cultural heritage and the opportunities for European enterprises will be held in Aachen, Germany, on 19 and 20 November 1998. It will be organised by the German Innovation Relay Centre coordinator for North-Rhine Westphalia, the Zentrum für Innovation und Technik (ZENIT).

The aim of the event is to promote European research for the protection of cultural heritage within the proposed context of the Key Action "The City of Tomorrow and Cultural Heritage" of the Fifth RTD Framework Programme. It also aims to enhance European industrial participation, particularly SME participation, in the development and assessment of methodologies and technologies for the protection of cultural heritage, to encourage awareness and involvement among those involved in the protection of national heritage at a national level and to promote cooperation and technology transfer.

The conference will focus on the following themes:

- Research for the protection of indoor cultural heritage;
- Research on damage assessment and surface treatment of historic buildings;
- Research on damage assessment and interventions on historic building structures.
