Mediterranean countries participate in FP5

European/Euro-Mediterranean Organisations will have an opportunity in April to participate in the call for proposals of the Fifth Framework Programme (FP5) for Research, Technological Development and Demonstration (RTD).

The European Commission DG XIII is, through the TELEMATICS Programme, sponsoring an international conference and exhibition on both Telemedicine and the City of Tomorrow.

The conference "The Information Society and telematics applications: an opportunity also for the Mediterranean third countries" will take place in Catania, Italy, between 16 and 18 April 1999.

It will focus primarily on the following two fields:

- The City of Tomorrow, which includes:
-- Cultural heritage and tourism;
-- Intermodal transport and associated telematics technologies;
-- Commerce and productive relations;
-- Quality of life and environment: electromagnetic emission and safety;
-- Vocational training and employment;
- Telemedicine, which includes:
-- Distance medicine, integrated diagnostic: video-teleconsultation (second opinion);
-- Telemedicine for emergency;
-- Telematics for chronic disease care (home care);
-- Remote meter-reading techniques and emission control for health and safety.
