The central theme of the 1996 Advanced Summer Institute (ASI), to be held in Toulouse, France, on 2-6 June 1996, will be "Life cycle approaches to production systems: management, control and supervision".

The annual Advanced Summer Institute is a pivotal activity within the framework of the European Union Network of Excellence in Intelligent Control and Integrated Manufacturing Systems (ICIMS), established under the Community's ESPRIT programme.

Developing integrated manufacturing systems and raising the automation level in production and manufacturing have been the main goals in an effort made by many companies, academic institutions and research centres to reform manufacturing methods for all industries.

The Advanced Summer Institute will bring together academic and industrial experts to present their views on the present state of the art in the technical areas involved. A series of invited lectures, technical presentations, round table discussions, demonstrations and exhibitions will raise the awareness of the scientific and industrial community regarding the potential impact of emerging solutions for world-class manufacturing in the future.

Papers are invited on the following topics:

- Intelligent communication network systems;
- Economic justification and methods;
- Environmental protection, minimum use of energy and materials;
- Recyclability;
- Total life-cycle cost;
- Manufacturing and assembly of microsystems;
- On-line configuration of manufacturing systems from multi-agents;
- The role of man in a CIM system;
- Multi-media communication of product documentation;
- CIM-architectures for virtual companies;
- (De-) centralization of production planning;
- IT-support in IT configuration;
- Concurrent engineering support;
- Product structure (BOM) maintenance;
- Robotics in manufacturing;
- Systems theory and controls;
- Intelligent decision support systems;
- Knowledge and model-based approaches.
