European Commission to present at Brussels Nuclear Energy Conference

Christian Waeterloos, the European Commission's Director of Nuclear Energy, will give the Keynote address at 'The Future of Nuclear Energy in Europe Conference' in Brussels on 11-12 May 2005.

Mr. Waeterloos, who heads up the Nuclear Energy Department in the Directorate-General for Transport and Energy (DG TREN), will present the perspective of the European Commission on the future role that nuclear power has to play in Europe's energy mix. The precise outline of Mr. Waeterloos' speech will be as follows:
09:10 The European Commission Perspective,· Creating a better link between energy, environmental and research policies,· Strengthening nuclear safety and security,· The European Climate Change Programme and strategies to implement the Kyoto protocols,· The Commission's view of the future for nuclear energy in Europe

Mr. Waeterloos joins a host of other top names at the conference, which will focus on debating the current and future role of nuclear power for electricity generation in Europe. Following this debate on the first day, the conference will move on to a more technical second day in which a variety of high-level speakers will discuss vitally important issues such as nuclear safety, security, strategies to handle waste, and the public perception of all of these. Finally, the conference will close with a short showcase of two of the most promising reactor technologies: the European Pressurised Reator (EPR) and the Pebble Bed Modular Reactor (PBMR).
