Workshop on Alpha-Spectrometry

Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe's Training Centre (FTU) organises a workshop on Alpha-Spectrometry. The event will take place in Karlsruhe, Germany, from 15 to 17 June 2005.

15 June 2005 - 17 June 2005

Due to their short range, alpha-emitters require a special measuring technique and work-intensive sample preparation. This makes alpha-spectrometry be considered an unpopular analysis method which is, unjustly, not frequently applied.
Alpha-spectrometry is, however, indispensable for the determination of both actinide elements originating from the operation of nuclear installations and the natural radionuclides such as Polonium and Radium in environmental samples.
By means of lectures and laboratory exercises the workshop provides the knowledge and skills required for the proficient and reliable application of alpha-spectrometry.
FTU is a member of the worldwide "ALMERA network (Analytical Laboratories for Measuring Environmental Radioactivity) of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for the determination of radionuclides in environmental samples.
Topics of the workshop are:,- alpha-spectrometry Fundamentals and Recent Developments,- Calibration of Alpha-spectrometers,- Chemistry of Alpha-emitters: Uranium, Thorium, Americium, Curium, Plutonium in Environmental Samples,- Radium: Natural Samples,- Sample Preparation Techniques: Electrolysis, Electroplating, Micro-precipitation,- Laboratory Exercises: , Energy and Efficiency Calibration, Data Evaluation, Separation of Actinides by Extraction Chromatography (TRU, UTEVA), Radium by Rad Filter Disks,- Visit to the Toxicological Laboratory of Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe.
