CMAT-European Meeting Point
The seminar was centred on the methodology of e-Learning in the Healthcare sector, during which the members of the group and specially invited guest speakers shared their experiences in the use of information and communication technologies for training healthcare professionals and support staff.
Over the two days of the seminar, a dozen training experts from Italy, Finland, Portugal, Germany, Sweden, Poland, Tunisia, the UK and Spain talked about the use of ICT in the training of healthcare professionals and support staff from different perspectives and debated with the attendees the adoption of new quality parameters in the virtual learning environment model.
The seminar gave the participants the opportunity to know about some of most innovative initiatives in Europe at the moment, such as the e-Learning model used in the Portuguese Healthcare System, the virtual content being designed by the Sheffield Hallam University in the UK, or CMAT itself in Granada as a model of a centre dedicated to healthcare professional training using a combination of various simulation methodologies along with the use of ICTs.
Teresa Campos of the Directorate General for Quality, Research and Knowledge Management from the Regional Health Ministry of the Andalusian Regional Government presented the projects that currently are facilitating and promoting the e-Learning model in the Andalusian Public Health Service. Among these are the “Portal MIR” (e-Learning and collaborative working portal for Resident doctors) and the Bank of Innovative Practices.
One of the projects that was received with special interest was-Informarse.es Salud-(Information is Health) of the Andalusian Regional Health Ministry which aims to provide citizens with healthcare information using new technologies such as Internet, third generation mobile phones and digital TV as a formula to provide reliable health information in an understandable and accessible format.
Based on the initiatives that were presented in the seminar and the input from the attendees, the Working Group continued during the second day of the event defining projects which the group has decided to work on, namely the creation of a European Quality Mark for e-Learning in the Healthcare sector and a virtual city in which citizens and healthcare professionals could participate using an avatar in order to experience the health consequences of lifestyle choices for example, smoking, dietary changes, exercise etc.
The inclusion of IAVANTE in the European Foundation for Quality in E-Learning supposes an important link with other European Institutions that are developing their activities in the same sector. Participating as an active member of EFQUEL allows IAVANTE to position its training activity, its projects and the Foundation within European Networks with similar objectives and missions. On the other hand, hosting the 4th edition of these EFQUEL seminars identifies CMAT as a European meeting point for training and ICT applied to healthcare.
The Advanced Multifunctional Complex for Simulation and Technological Innovation is the headquarters of IAVANTE in Granada,Spain. Situated in the Health Sciences Technology Park, it is a centre of the Regional Ministry for Health of the Andalusian Regional Government and is dedicated to the training of healthcare professionals using innovative simulation methodologies.
CMAT is a unique complex in Europe both for the technological infrastructure it possesses as well as for the training model that it uses. The training given by IAVANTE is based on simulation of real life situations using robot mannequins, virtual simulators that combine visual and tactile simulation and also actors as simulated patients; all this is done in highly realistic scenarios simulating operating theatres, critical care units, doctor’s consulting rooms and out-of -hospital areas such as a home setting or an urban street environment.
