Open source software is entering all sizes companies, from large to small and medium enterprises, in several mass market and enterprise applications fields. Its benefits in terms of lower license and development costs, license, flexibility and market innovation is beating traditional skepticism about open solutions.
This is mainly thanks to larger and larger developers and users communities, contributing to
increase the know how about the delivered projects, as well as their reliability.
For highly specialized and niche market sectors, such a transition is still to come, as specific development expertise and more narrow application field, reduces the size of developers and users community, thus weakening their vital support.
As a consequence, progresses in terms of reliability improvement and quality of the delivered services are slow, thus making OSS integration within complex industrial-strength
applications a risk, especially in critical scenarios.
This workshop aims to bring together researchers and industrialists from the embedded systems
community, in order to join the hands and build an alive community around open source. It will provide a stimulating, and fruitful forum to foster collaboration, to discuss ideas, and to propose the actions for the next future. Experiences gained in the SHARE project will be presented, which aim to give an actual boost
to the use of open source software in the embedded system industry.
A plenary session and a technical demonstration will be organized for an interesting full day experience (from 10.00 a.m to 5.30 p.m).
