A workshop on navigation, guidance and control of underwater vehicles will take place from 10 to 12 April 2012 in Porto, Portugal.

Underwater vehicles fulfil a variety of commercial and scientific uses. They come in a wide range of variants and are often very complex mechanical and technological vehicles. For example, a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) is a tethered underwater vehicle that is unoccupied, highly manoeuvrable and operated by a person aboard a vessel. An autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV), on the other hand, is a robot which travels underwater without requiring input from an operator.

The event will bring together key industrial and academic practitioners for discussions and demonstrations of recent advances in navigation, guidance and control of unmanned underwater vehicles (UUV). It will also be a forum where experienced researchers can engage with each other and with postdoctoral students in order to share experiences and motivate new research agendas. Special attention will be given to the challenging tasks of multiple vehicle cooperative navigation and control in the presence of stringent acoustic communication constraints, as well as non-conventional, geophysical-based navigation methods. For further information, please visit: http://paginas.fe.up.pt/~ngcuv2012/(opens in new window)
