In 1995, the European Commission published "Medicine in Europe - a guide to funding for medical, dental and veterinary research workers". Following the success of this guide, an Italian version - "Medicina in Europa" has now been published. This new edition tailors and adapts the original publication to the specific context of the Italian biomedical research community. The aim of the guide is to provide the Italian biomedical community with a clearly targeted and detailed guide, appearing in the researchers' native language, containing references to national contacts and placing EU research in a domestic context. "Medicina in Europa", introduced by former European Commissioner responsible for research policy, Prof. Antonio Ruberti, explores in depth the "classic" RTD programmes in this area - essentially BIOMED and BIOTECH. It also devotes considerable attention, however, to "horizontal" programmes such as the INCO programme (International Cooperation), the Training and Mobility of Researchers programme (TMR), the INNOVATION programme, and the SOCRATES and LEONARDO DA VINCI programmes in the field of education and vocational training. In addition, initiatives under the Structural Funds and under the MEDA, PHARE and TACIS programmes are also covered.
