The EU's Training and Mobility of Researchers (TMR) programme finances the participation of researchers in projects across the EU and associated states. The Building Research Establishment (BRE) at Cardington, United Kingdom, has recently been awarded a two-year training contract (1998-2000) for training researchers on whole building projects under the TMR Large Scale Facilities initiative. The BRE Large Building Test Facility (LBTF), housed inside a former airship hangar, has been designated a Large Scale Facility, and under the TMR contract, researchers will be able to participate in whole building projects on one or more of the three multi-storey buildings contained within the facility. These buildings will provide researchers with the opportunity to investigate the behaviour of Europe's major construction materials and to improve understanding of how real buildings behave under different environmental and accidental loads. They can also be used in the validation of theoretical models and calibration of recommendations given in European and national standards. Applications are now being sought from both research groups and individuals interested in taking part in the programme. Training projects need not be restricted to structural issues, and projects making use of the buildings to examine topics such as thermal and acoustic performance, whole-life costing and sustainability issues are particularly welcome. Priority will be given to research groups who do not normally have access to the facilities, inexperienced and younger groups of researchers and to those groups making efficient and effective use of the resources supplied.
