Presidency event - Research and Innovation dimension of sustainable and resilient food systems

Research and innovation (R&I) are key enablers for sustainable and resilient food systems.

Hungary will take on the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the second half of 2024, after the European elections. The foreseen Presidency event will provide a space to discuss R&I achievements and needs to help drive the transition towards sustainable, healthy and inclusive food systems, building on the progress made under the Belgian presidency.

Achievements of the Horizon Europe programme need further dissemination and targeted cooperation. Hungary due to the geographical vicinity acknowledges the need to intensify the knowledge transfer towards the EU candidate countries for creating a more integrated and resilient European food system in the future. Thematically, Food 2030, the bioeconomy, the Soil Mission “A Soil Deal for Europe” and Ocean Mission “Restore our Oceans and Waters” will also be elements of the conference as they can strongly contribute to sustainable and resilient food systems. There are furthermore possible synergies with the BIOEAST Initiative and the Standing Committee for Agricultural Research (SCAR) to be embedded.

The event will bring together Member States, Members of the European Parliament, experts and interested citizens, including youth representatives, from the R&I community across Europe.

The event will take place in Budapest during the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The European Commission will support the organisation of the event in cooperation with the entity designated by the Hungarian Presidency.
