Objective

The European Cell Death Organization (ECDO) was founded in 1994 and its members represent all major cell death research groups in Europe. The main aims of the ECDO are to share information on current developments in the cell death research field and to fac ilitate scientific links between participating laboratories. Therfore, ECDO applies for European financial support for the organization of a series of annual high-level scientific meetings, workshops and basic courses focussing on cell death research. Stim ulation of cell death research is of great importance for the European community since deregulation of cell death contributes to many diseases such as cancer, degenerative disorders, inflammation, etc. A better understanding of the molecular fundamentals o f cell death can lead to therapeutic improvement of several diseases. ECDO has organized before annual "Euroconferences on apoptosis", special workshops and courses for young researchers. The European School of Hematology and ECDO jointly organized the fir st seven Meetings with financial support of the European Community. From the eighth Meeting ECDO is the only organizer of the Euroconferences. The annual "Euroconferences on apoptosis" have an excellent scientific reputation and aim to bring together mainl y meetings attract many early-stage researchers since there is ample time scheduled in the programs to present their data both by means of oral presentations and poster sessions. During these sessions there is a lot of discussion between established and ju nior researchers, contributing to scientific training of young researchers. In addition, it is our experience that by bringing together the European cell death research community many long-standing collaborations arise, contributing to the aim of creating a strategic European scientific position in the field of cell death research.
