Objective
Congestion on European roads and railways, and indeed in EC airspace, is becoming an ever-increasing problem. Currently, the economic losses relating to this congestion is estimated to a staggering 2% of the EC gross national product. One of the main remedial actions is the change of cargo routes from road to sea, which however raises the issue of quality and safety in waterborne transport, also in the part undertaken by high speed craft (HSC). The objective of S@S is to develop a formalised methodology for design for safety of HSC using state-of-the- art techniques and tools. The main deliverable from the project is tools that will enable HSC designers to reach an optimal solution with regard to safety and through-life cost. In addition to EC inner market transport benefits, project results are expected to increase European HSC shipbuilding competitiveness.
