Distant learning brokerage environment for life long training of individuals with emphasis in socially excluded communities

Objective

The HOPE project aims to contribute to the economic development of the Community and the strengthening of its social policy by providing methods and services for enhancing and facilitating self assessed life long distant Learning with emphasis in socially excluded individuals such as state prisoners.

The project exploits alternative technologies such as interactive video (MPEG4), virtual reality environments (VRML) and electronic questionnaires (QML) towards the development of a co-operative training environment upon Internet and other Digital infrastructures.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
The above-mentioned objectives will be realised through the implementation and demonstration of a multi-layer architecture comprising alternative presentation modules (e.g. text, digital presentations, interactive video, virtual reality exercises, electronic questionnaires, etc.), functional components and multimedia data models (e.g. MPEG4, WRL, QML & databases) for the representation of the training material. All architectural components will work together in order to provide the desired functionality of HOPE, which will be defined by the users during the User Requirement phase of the project, under the command of the pedagogical team.

The demonstration and verification of the results of the project will be achieved through two national pilot trials in Greece and Spain, with active participation of players from both countries. During these trials, the system will be tested with real data and real users (young prisoners) while specialised psychologists and pedagogues will study the impact of HOPE on trainees, their behaviours and attitudes. At a previous stage, the technology providers themselves will evaluate the functionality through laboratory simulation models. All corrective actions will be elaborated and embedded to the final deliverables of the project in order to match the requirements of the technology implementation plan of HOPE and its exploitation in other markets.

MILESTONES
Milestone 1 [month 11]: Architecture and design of HOPE's first prototype Milestone 2 [month 18]: Delivery of initial HOPE prototype & 1st draft of the exploitation plan Milestone 3 [month 24]: Delivery of the final HOPE prototype Milestone 4 [month 30]: HOPE Technology Implementation Plan
The main objective of the project is to improve the learning process of socially excluded individuals such as young prisoners. The idea is to combine alternative interactive content adapted to specific training programs. These training programs will be based on evolving trainee and will incorporate highly sophisticated evaluation methods. This means that the evolution of the training programs can be highly parameterised depending on the learning goals and the progress of the trainee.

The concept of HOPE is that interactive training content can improve learning. This can be achieved, for example, by encouraging experimental participation of learners or by providing self-assessment activities. Another important issue is that psychological criteria have to be taken into consideration for the development of training processes especially adapted to the young offender's target groups presenting special characteristics or behaviour.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
