In-situ imaging and recognition of harmful Algal bloom species by artificial neural network

Objective

HAB-BUOY is a highly innovative in-situ moored instrument for the detection of harmful algal blooms (HAB) in coastal waters. Toxic and nuisance species of algae have a serious economic impact on the shell fisheries of the European Economic Zone (EEZ) causing incidences of poisoning in people eating contaminated shellfish. No such instrument exists commercially at present and its manufacture requires the integration of several new and innovative techniques. There is a need for this type of instrument to be built and deployed in coastal aquaculture regions to more effectively monitor the presence of HAB species.

Description of the work
The proposed research will develop HAB-BUOY so that it can image and recognise harmful algae. HAB-BUOY is in essence a microscope coupled to natural object recognition software, which will be operated either underwater suspended from a buoy, or on a mussel-producing raft, or in the laboratory to assist government scientists to monitor HAB algae.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)
