INTEGRAL ROCK ANALYSIS, A NEW APPROACH TO LITHOGEOCHEMICAL EXPLORATION

Objetivo



TO DEVELOP A COST-EFFECTIVE ANALYTICAL METHOD FOR THE RAPID ANALYSIS OF SOLID ROCK SAMPLES, PERMITTING THE DIRECT CORROLATION OF GEOCHEMICAL AND MINERALOGICAL PROPERTIES OF SAMPLES

WITH THE PRESENT DEVELOPMENT OF AUTOMATED X-RAY FLUORESCENCE EQUIPMENT, THE BOTTLENECK IS NO LONGER THE ANALYSIS ITSELF, BUT THE SAMPLE PREPARATION, AND THE MINERALOGICAL AND PETROLOGICAL FOLLOW-UP OF THE ANALYSES. BY USING SUCCESSIVE SLICES OF SOLID ROCK, CUT FROM HAND SPECIMENS OR DRILL-CORES AS ANALYTICAL SAMPLES, THE FOLLOWING WILL BE ACHIEVED:

- A GREAT REDUCTION IN SAMPLE PREPARATION TIME

- THE ELIMINATION OF SEVERAL POTENTIALLY CONTAMINATING STEPS

- OBTAINING INSIGHT IN THE GEOCHEMICAL VARIABILITY OF THE ROCK IN THE-CM-DM SCALE, INFORMATION THAT IS ALWAYS LOST DURING PULVERIZATION AND HOMOGENIZATION.

THIS VARIABILITY ITSELF MAY TURN OUT TO BE A CRUCIAL PARAMETER FOR THE DISTINCTION OF MINERALISED VS. BARREN ROCK UNITS.

- SELECTION OF SAMPLES FROM THE ANALYSED SEQUENCE WHICH ARE HIGHEST IN THE ELEMENT(S) OF INTEREST FOR FURTHER DETAILED MINERALOGICAL OR ANALYTICAL (MICROPROBE) STUDY

- SELECTION OF SAMPLES (WHICH ARE BY THEIR FORM ALREASY SUITABLE FOR THIN SECTION PREPARATION) FOR FURTHER PETROLOGICAL STUDY,

- STUDY OF THE CO-VARIATION OF ELEMENTS WITHIN SAMPLE SEQUENCES

- THE POSSIBILITY TO CARRY OUT X-RAY DIFFRACTION ON THE SAME SAMPLES FOR WHICH ANALYTICAL INFORMATION HAS BEEN OBTAINED.

IT IS REALISED THAT THE QUALITY OF EACH INDIVIDUAL ANALYSIS WILL NOT BE AS GOOD AS THAT OF A HOMOGENIZED SAMPLE TRANSFORMED TO A GLASS OR PRESSED PWDER BRIQUET; THE PROPOSED TECHNIQUE IS NOT MEANT TO REPLACE THE X-RAY FLUORESCENCE ANALYSIS AS USED UP TILL NOW, BUT IT IS CONSIDERED TO GIVE MEANINGFUL GEOCHEMICAL INFORMATION OF A DIFFERENT NATURE AT LESS COST.
