HYDROBIOLOGICAL SURVEILLANCE OF SELECTED HYDROBIOTOPES OF AETOLOAKARNANIA, GREECE.

Objectif

TO DEVELOP AN ECOLOGICALLY BASED INTEGRATED MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FOR MEDITERRANEAN LOWLAND AQUATIC BIOTOPES.

THIS PROJECT IS THE SECOND PHASE OF A RESEARCH PROJECT SUPPORTED IN THE 3RD ENVIRONMENT R&D PROGRAMME (CONTRACT ENV-792-GR).
DURING THIS PHASE EMPHASIS WILL BE GIVEN TO THE INVESTIGATION OF THE CHEMICAL CHARACTERIZATION, LIMNOLOGY AND BIOLOGY OF THE FOLLOWING AQUATIC BIOTOPES OF A DRAINAGE BASIN OF THE GREEK MAINLAND:

- TRICHONIS LAKE (OLIGOTROPHIC-MESOTROPHIC, ACID-CARBONATE TYPE, WARM MONOMICTIC)
- AMVRAKIA LAKE (OLIGOTROPHIC, SULPHUROUS TYPE)
- OZEROS LAKE (SMALL ALLOCHTHONOUS LAKE, EUTROPHIC)
- LYSSIMACHIA LAKE (HIGHLY POLLUTED SHALLOW LAKE WITHOUT THERMOCLINE, SEWAGE TREATMENT PLANT IN CONSTRUCTION)
- LAGOON OF AETOLIKON (DEEP LAGOON WITH MONIMOLIMNION)
- ACHELOOS RIVER

AFTER THE HYDROBIOLOGICAL CLASSIFICATION OF THE BIOTOPES AND BASED ON PHYSICAL, CHEMICAL AND BIOLOGICAL DATA THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF POLLUTION AND OTHER HUMAN ACTIVITY ON THE BIOTOPES WILL BE ASSESSED. THIS WILL BE USED TO DEVELOP AN ECOLOGICALLY-BASED INTEGRATED MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FOR THIS TYPE OF MEDITERRANEAN HYDROBIOTOPES.
