DEVELOPING A REAL TIME, INTEGRATED OPERATOR COMMUNICATION SYSTEM AFFORDABLE BY CLOTHING SME'S

Objective

With the support of the Commission of the European Communities under its BRITE scheme, 5 partners in Ireland, England and Holland have developed a prototype Real time Integrated Operator Communication System for Clothing Manufacturing small and medium sized enterprises (SME).

Before the results of the project can be successfully exploited, the Partners believe the following broad areas of work need to be undertaken:
Further refinement and extension of the software;
Redesign of the real time terminal to reduce cost and make it suitable for volume production;
Development of comprehensive documentation including training and maintenance procedures and promotional literature;
Development of a marketing plan.

It has been decided to exploit the research by licencing the opportunity to Kewill Group plc to market the results to an organization with the capacity not only to service the apparel industry, but also to market the results in other areas of industry to which it is believed that the system developed during the research may be adapted.

With the agreement of the Partners, Kewill took the opportunity to show the prototype system at CLOTECH 89, an exhibition for the apparel industry held in Manchester in May 1989, immediately after the conclusion of the project.

Kewill reported that there had been a favourable reaction from potential clients to the prototype system displayed. From discussions and assessment of competitive products, Kewill have prepared and commenced work on a schedule of actions to extend the facilities provided within the system and to refine the product to make it suitable for commercial customers. They are now actively assessing the suitability of the present design of the prototype real time terminals. At this time, Kewill are unable to be categoric about the price at which the product will be offered, but they firmly believe that it will be fully competitive and affordable by clothing SMEs.

1. TO UPGRADE PRODUCTIVITY AND REDUCE COSTS IN SMES BY PROVIDING ACCURATE, TIMELY INFORMATION FOR MANAGEMENT DECISIONS.
2. TO MAKE MODERN DATA-INFORMATION PROCESSING SYSTEMS ACCESSIBLE TO AND AFFORDABLE BY SMES IN THE CLOTHING INDUSTRY.
3. TO DEVELOP A LOW COST, REAL TIME COMMUNICATION SYSTEM AS AN INTEGRAL PART OF AN OVERALL MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM.
4. TO DESIGN A SYSTEM RELYING ON LOW COST MICROCOMPUTERS, LINKED ON A NETWORK BASIS.
