USE OF PASSIVE SOLAR TECHNOLOGY COUPLED WITH A HEAT PUMP FOR FISH FARMING IN GREECE

Objetivo

The project aims to demonstrate that a combination of passive, active and heat pump system with microcomputer controllers, offers a cost effective solution to most of fish farm energy problems and it also quite attractive prospects concerning low maintenance costs, durability and simplicity of operation.

The solar system has to cover the energy needs of a fish-farm, which are : - Heating of fish tank supply water
Two thermal sources are used to heat the supply water :
. The unglazed solar collectors (1000 m2)
. The water to water heat pumps (650 kW)
These two sources operate in series or in parallel depending on the solar collectors temperature outlet, the required temperature of the fish tank supply water and the waste water temperature. The system is microprocessor controlled according to the highest efficiency for the whole system.
- Building heating and cooling
The thermal sources used for heating colling of the buildings are :
. passive system
. air to water heat pumps (45 kW electrical)
The heating and cooling is done with the successive use of the above mentioned energy sources. When the heating load is low the solar system covers the heating load. In case the load is not fully covered, the heat pump starts to operate to cover the remaining heating or cooling demand. Duringthis period, the heat pump operates to cover the cooling load and the rejected warm fluid is used to fill up the fish tanks.
Annual Savings Calculations
The total annual savings for fish farm supply water heating is estimated to 11.3 GWh/year. The amount of 1.1 GWh/year is covered by the collectors while the remaining 10.2 GWh/year is provided by the heat pumps.
The total energy offered by the passive system is equal to 32 MWh/year. The total annual building sensible heating load is estimated at 63 MWh/year. The remaining 31 MWh/year is supplied by the heat pumps. The cooling load of 111 MWh/year is also covered by the heat pumps.
