COLLECTION AND RECYCLING PLANT: AN INTEGRATED SYSTEM FOR ENERGY SAVING AND COST REDUCTION IN WASTE MANAGEMENT

Objetivo

The aim is to demonstrate an integrated waste material recovery plant, thereby reducing significantly the need for landfill.

The plant integrates collection and disposal enabling the plant to operate at full capacity for a minimum number of hours per day. It accepts 200 T/day of municipal and industrial waste of which 120 T/day is to be recovered as useful by-products in the form of RDF (15,800 T/y); compost (13,400 T/y); ferrous metal (3,500 T/y); paper (3,700 T/y) and plastic (1,000 T/y).
The thermal value of the combustible fraction is estimated to be 150 MWh/y, 46% of which is provided by the RDF which is currently used as fuel in a brick-kiln.
The plant serves a population of 140,000 reducing the volume of waste going to landfill by 87%. The residues from the plant are landfilled, however, they are largely inert and therefore cause few environmental problems.
The reduced volume of waste going to landfill also significantly reduces the transport costs of the disposal operation.
