SELF RELEASING OFFSHORE ANCHOR

Objectif

Construction of a prototype of a remotely released offshore anchor, testing of the prototype and determination of the feasibility of commercial exploitation of such an anchor.
The innovation is to redesign a "Vryhof MKV" anchor to incorporate an acoustic release device to allow the shank to rotate up to an angle of zero degrees with the flukes after receipt of a trigger signal. The anchor will come loss then if the rig hauls the anchor line.
Construction of a "full scale" prototype of such an anchor is essential as to test the suitability of the system in practice.
A 1.5 tons anchor is available, complete with communication system. The release system has been redesigned and is materialised through 2 casettes incorporating the mechanical and accoustical release system. A 12 tons anchor can be constructed on order.
Retrieval of heavy anchors for offshore units is normally done by anchor handling tugs. Such operations are normally restricted to moderate wave conditions due to excessive tug motions and limited winch power.
Neddrill is thinking of the possibility to use the anchor line in order to retrieve the anchor by the offshore unit itself. Such a procedure requires that the holding power of the anchor can be released remotely.
The innovative self-releasing offshore anchor will enable immediate release of the anchors in case of emergencies.
Furthermore the anchor has several operational advantages when compared with conventional offshore anchors.
