WASTE HEAT UTILISATION IN AGRICULTURAL CULTIVATION

Objetivo

To use waste heat from a steam power plant to promote agricultural cultivation, and to conduct tests to determine which cultigens respond best to treatment of this type.
The results to date are mixed, with different species responding at varying rates. The small size of the tests plots make it difficult to estimate the economic viability of waste heat utilisation to large scale plantations.
Potatoes and leeks have shown a clear reaction to soil heating while for strawberries, although treatment increases propagation, for production the yield is increased for only one cultivation in three.
The expected advantages of the project are based on previous investigations carried out in the USA, France, West Germany and The Netherlands. These demonstrate a quicker germination of cultivated plants, improved product quality, reliable anticipation of harvest and simplification of cultivation planning.
To properly analyse the combined effects of increased sprinkling (due to ground heating), increased biodegradation and the compensating, increased nitrogen fertilisation, the program will be progressively adjusted to different experimental parameters throughout its anticipated 4 year life cycle.
The tests are carried out on a field 5 Km from the FLEVO electric power plant. The field has a 1.5 ha extension of which 0.8 ha will be used. Water is available at 15 to 25 deg. C and mixed with cooler or artificially warmed water (in a close-circuit boiler) up to 30 deg. C. It is then transferred by pipe which feeds the open circuit, underground pipe distribution network: this is buried at a depth of 0.5 m. Water to be used for irrigation is collected at the end of the network.
The cultigens to be tested include various vegetables, legumes, fruits and nurseries.
It is expected that a system will be installed in the experimental field to monitor/the biological, biochemical, physical and chemical reactions which take place.
Interpretation of results will be carried out by specialised agricultural institutes.
