DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF A RURAL DAYCARE CENTER USING INTEGRATED BIOCLIMATIC SYSTEMS FOR HEATING AND COOLING

Objectif

The project aims to demonstrate the principles of "bioclimatic" design, especially for the integrating of in and outdoor spaces used by children in all seasons.
Special attention is furthermore paid to the comfort of the indoor spaces in relation to energy and lighting levels.

The project consists of a daycare centre for children in the north of Greece.
The building complex is composed of two main units connected with pedestrian pathwalks and open and covered play areas of different character. The total indoor area is 750 m2 approximately and it is divided in different levels on the ground floor, following the slope of the site. The building complex is oriented toward the South, with an open pedestrian space at its center, while each building is organised around a high central space covered by a specially designed solar roof.
Direct gain solar systems are used in all classrooms and they are combined with separate solar greenhouse systems attached to the South of some units, depending on use, so that children can enjoy cultivating their own plants throughout the year. An open evaporative cooling system will be used in the summer for both indoor and outdoor spaces, bringing the children into contact with running water, while plants and shading of outdoorplay areas will provide comfortable surroundings throughout the year. The combination of passive solar systems used provides for a 52% of the complexe's heating needs, while auxiliary heating will be provided by a simple, all purpose air system, using oil or wood chips as the heat source.
