IMPROVEMENT OF A LOCAL PRESERVATION PROCESS FOR WOOD PRODUCTS WITH REDUCED ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

Objectif

The first objective of the research is the development of theoretical model of diffusion (basic lows and computer model) under water absorption effect and moisture content transfer adapted to four main European softwood species. The efficacy of different preservative components will be measured and the toxic preservative concentration (efficacy level) will be studied taking into account the different factors (e.g. species, preservatives, class of risk depending on the type of commodity). The model developed and experimentally validated makes possible to optimize for each wood product the quantity of preservative needed and the pills or rods localization.

The secondary effects of preservative diffusion under water absorption on building components and other materials such as paints, glues, metal, glass, will be clearly established as well as the possible environmental impact of the new preservative method. A special emphasis will be given to the control of leaching effects and emission into air from the installed preservative components (pills or rods).

The subject of the research concerns the improvement of localized treatment of preservation for wood products only active when (above a certain critical moisture content level) and where (area above this critical level) it is necessary.

The results of the research make possible the future development of efficient treatments adapted to the run risk with reduced environmental impact (less preservatives) and low costs process compared to traditional vacuum-pressure process. The method is based on the diffusion of active preservative components from solid concentrated pills or rods installed inside wood products (window, laminated beams and wooden structure, poles).
