Objective
The NARCISSE project aims to create a very high-resolution image bank of the art treasures of Europe's major museums. This will be composed essentially of scanned images of x-rays, ultraviolet and infrared as well as visible-light photographs and other documents relating to their art holdings. The museums possess some one and a half million such reference images and these are increasing at the rate of 100.000 a year. They are essential for authentication conservation and research work. However they are often not easily able to be consulted in their present form because of their fragility or sensitivity to light or handling. During the pilot project some 50.000 ducuments will be loaded into the bank together with a multilingual text database. The system will provide for direct consultation in each of the partners' premises but at least one pilot optical disk will be produced, with the later intention of producing further thematic optical discs for wider dissemination.
