Friction stir welding UNiversal HEAD

Project description

Head for friction stir welding technology

Friction stir welding (FSW) is a solid-state joining process with significant advantages over conventional fusion welding methods. The EU-funded project FUN HEAD will develop a special universal FSW head that should fit existing computer numerical control machines. This FSW head will include a force control system and mechanisms to use the retractable pin and stationary shoulder tools. FUN HEAD’s technology reduces the investment costs of FSW technology with a performance on par with specialised FSW machines or robotic FSW stations. The advantages include higher quality welds (mechanical and fatigue properties, corrosion resistance), absence of welding consumables, low energy costs, environment-friendly, no joint preparation or post treatment because of the low distortion and shrinkage.

Objective

The project aim is to design, manufacture and set up a special universal FSW head for all CNC machines. This FSW head will include a force control system and mechanisms to use retractable pin tool.
