Simultaneous nitrogen elimination and energy production for reclamation of wastewaters and production of raw materials

Objetivo

Description in accordance with each MacroJob (MJ) :
- MJ 1 - Enhancing Anaerobic Wastewater Treatment and Energy Generation by Incorporating Nitrification / Denitrification;
- MJ 2 - High-Strength Wastewater Denitrification in Biogas Reactors at low energy expenditure;
- MJ 3 - Nitrification / Denitrification and Anaerobic Minimisation of Biomass in Control of Eutrophication with minimal energy consumption;
- MJ 4 - Nitrification / Denitrification in Different Reactor Configuration for Unrestricted Reuse of Effluents;
- MJ 5 - Nitrifying / Denitrifying Biomass in Heavy Metal Removal and Extended Wastewater Reuse.
- Of the activities carried out within MJ-1 the most significant finding of this first year of research was the important influence of the aeration cycles on the development of denitrifying biomass (1). Within the activities of MJ-1, the results obtained were used to determine a reduced number of nitrite and/or nitrate concentrations for which N-NOx reduction and carbon anaerobic digestion. The experimental set-up confirmed this possibility, both with synthetic and piggery wastewater (2) . Tasks regarding MJ-3 have been completed, and the preliminary experiments on BNR process carried out confirmed the necessity to obtain higher biodegradable organic content in the influent in the BNR pilot plant. Production of easily degradable organic source has been achieved in concentrations higher than 20g/L (3). Within MJ-4 the following results were obtained :
- determination of adsorption isotherm for ammonium in pure solution;
- determination of adsorption isotherms for the major cations present in secondary effluent: NH4+, Ca++, Mg++, K+ and Na+ in mixed solute (simulation of effluent);
- determination of separation factors and affinity sequence for the above cations;
- breakthrough experiments for the major cations present in secondary effluent;
- determination of the optimal reactor hydraulic retention time during the ion exchange phase (4). Finally within MJ-5, an inventory list of vegetable collected in the humid region of Morocco has been produced.

Follow-up

- Each MJ will continue with the work-programme, in order to fulfil the objectives of the project
MacroJob-1
- T11-1 : preparation of inoculum of nitrifying biomass using sludges from WWTP of S. Feliu.
- T11-2 : construction of reactors and purchase of periphericals (pumps, stirrers, etc.) for nitrifying reactors;
- T11-3 : enrichment of nitrifying and denitrifying cultures;
- T11-4 : set-up of anaerobic digesters;
- T11-5 : start-up of anaerobic digesters.

MacroJob2
- A number of subtasks were devoted to the construction of reactors (laboratory scale), establishment of denitrifying cultures in an anaerobic fixed bed reactor. Drawings' realisation and choice of the wastewater that will be used. (piggery waste was the selection, in accordance with the selection of that carried out in MacroJob-1). Subtask J22.a. Study of the denitrification in flasks at different initial nitrate and/or nitrite concentrations and C/N ratios. Subtask J22.c. Methanized effluent nitrification in the reactor n_2. From month M4, the synthetic effluent was replaced with the methanized effluent from the reactor n_1.

MacroJob-3
- This research is based on the integration between the BNR process and the anaerobic fermentation/digestion of separate collected organic fraction of municipal solid waste (SC-OFMSW). Task 30 is the erection of a pilot plant to carry out these objectives. Task 31 is the Establishment of optimal conditions in anaerobic reactors to reach a minimum VFA concentration of 2Og/L, which was :

MacroJob-4
- Task 41: Establishment of Nitrifying - Denitrifying Cultures In Integrated And Segregated Reactors Using Different Zeolites As Carriers;
- Task 42 : Effects of C source, C/N ratio and NH4+/NO3- ratio on biofilm thickness, kinetic studies. Adsorption of the major cations present in secondary effluents on zeolite (Chabazite) - batch experiments.

MacroJob-5
- Literature review and information analysis;
- Botanic-microbiologic inventory.
