Objetivo An analysis of the relationship proposed in 1970 to take account of the strain rate in models of steel selection reveals that the grades between 400 and 500 MPa are not favoured by this law. There exist, however, experimental data contradicting this trend. This research aims to quantify the strain rate sensitivity of high strength structural steels using small plain or notched specimens of base metal or heat affected zone in a large range of strain rates. Those steels investigated are processed by thermo-mechanical rolling, accelerated cooling, quenching and self-tempering with a yield stress between 350 and 700 Mpa, and a thickness between 15 and 40 mm.
