Thermodynamics of complex systems

Objectif

The research projects of the Eastern European partners in the European Thermodynamics Network are: 1. The derivation of thermodynamic variational principles whose extrema yield the balance equations for energy and momentum of thermodynamic fluids in the presence of heat and mass transport.
New types of "thermo-hydrodynamic" potentials will emerge as generalizations of the dissipative potentials of linear irreversible thermodynamics.

2. The formulation of a higher-order thermodynamics in which higher-order moments offer a more detailed statistical description than that presently afforded by conventional statistical thermodynamics in the thermodynamic limit.
The state of nature is now determined by a set of generalized temperature coefficients, being the Lagrange multipliers of the additional constraints imposed upon the entropy in the maximum entropy formulation. Higher-order thermodynamics should be relevant to small systems, where Stirling's approximation is invalid, and to critical phenomena that are characterized by a family of critical exponents, rather than a single exponent.

3. The internal state variable formulation of nonequilibrium thermodynamics will be applied to the study of nonlinear processes occurring at finite rates.
The set of generalized, independent and extensive, variables will be enlarged to include these rate variables.
The applied problems of lubrification, characterized as a non-Newtonian fluid, radiative heat transfer in furnaces and discharge lamps, as well as the more pure scientific problems of analyzing nonlinear chemical oscillatory reaction mechanisms for multi-stationary and limit cycle behaviour, and pattern formation in reaction-diffusion systems, will be studied by applying the internal thermodynamic variable approach together with stability considerations from dynamic system theory.
