Flavoproteins : structural dynamics, catalysis and cell biology

Objetivo

It is the aim of the FLAPS network to investigate the structures, mechanisms of action and cell biology of flavoproteins. FLAPS will extend and enhance existing contacts between participants. It will investigate a variety of problems at four levels of complexity: flavoprot eins that contain flavin as the only prosthetic group; flavoproteins that contain additional redox centres; flavoproteins that function in multienzyme complexes; and the role of flavin in the regulation of cellular homeostasis.
The proposed contribution from the Vilnius group conforms fully with these aims by bringing to bear its expertise on the interactions of flavoenzymes with quinone and aromatic nitrocompounds. Such interactions can lead to enzyme inhibition, to oxidative stress, and they are important in the anticancer and other cytotoxic activities of nitrocompounds and quinones. The proposed collaboration will allow collaborative work with several other groups in the Network.
