Genetic screening and predictive medicine: ethical and philosophical perspectives, with special reference to multifactorial diseases

Objetivo

EUROSCREEN (the short title of the BIOMED) project on "Genetic screening: ethical and philosophical perspectives" is
examining the extent to which genetic screening programmes are in progress in European countries; analysing the values
underlying social policies on these developments; and
attempting to develop a normative framework with a view to
making recommendations on criteria for the introduction,
implementation and evaluation of screening. The additional
proposal will extend the work into countries in Central and
Eastern Europe. Questions to be addressed will include, for
each country: the state of the art in genetic screening; the delineation of the concepts of normality and abnormality; the social response, in terms of legislation and policy documents. The extent to which different models of health are subscribed to and their influence on social policy will be explored.
Particular attention will be paid to developments concerning multifactorial diseases and to childhood testing for late
onset disorders.
