Improvement of analysis of clays and minerals in mine dusts, using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, in the range close to far infrared (500-200 cm{-1})

Objetivo

Developments in mining technology have made it necessary to take a fresh look at the problem of analysing the harmful dusts inhaled by miners.

Prospective developments in individual measuring, operating conditions and the use of new materials pose problems of analysis for which no satisfactory solutions have yet been found.

The available dust quantities are steadily decreasing, new interference problems have come to light and the link between toxicity and the composition of dusts has not yet been fully explained, despite extensive work using infrared spectroscopy in the 4000-450 cm{-1} range.

New possibilities have recently appeared in the spectrum range to 200 cm{-1}. Numerous mineral compounds show intense absorption bands in this area of the spectrum (close to far infrared).

We are therefore proposing to pursue work in this area of the spectrum, focusing particularly on the following points:

- analysis of small dust quantities (less than or equal to 1 mg)
- influence of dust particle size and matrix type on the accuracy of measurements,
- speed and accuracy,
- reliability in regular service.
