Objectif Total waste treatment process from waste release up to interim/final storage has to be controlled. Continuous process control is preferable to verification just before storage because of its higher reliability, traceability and the possibility for corrections of the system. This research project refers to the development of test methods which are necessary to control the process of conditioning of radioactive waste. The emphasis lies upon measurement techniques and operations. On the basis of the international exchange of information between the partners recommendations will be formulated with respect to standard testing methods and procedures where specific quality systems can be based on.Continuous process control of radioactive waste is preferable to verification prior to storage due to higher reliability, traceability and the possibility of making corrections to the system. This research project refers to the development of test methods necessary to control the process of conditioning radioactive waste. The emphasis lies upon measurement techniques and operations. On the basis of the international exchange of information between the partners, recommendations will be formulated with respect to standard testing methods and procedures which specific quality systems can be based on. The study incorporates a description of waste pretreatment, cementation, packaging, transport and preparation for storage of low and medium wet radioactive waste from nuclear power plants in Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands and the corresponding quality actions and requirements. A literature survey was also made of chemical and radiological characterization methods.Work programme: The decisive elements for process control are tests and procedures to check if the criteria are met. Therefore, in this research project test methods and procedures are being developed with respect to the chemical, radiological and mechanical/physical properties of radwaste.
