Enhanced Design of High Pressure Gear Pumps Using Environmentaly Acceptable Hydraulic Fluids

Objetivo

BE-95-1046 Enhanced Design of High Pressure Gear Pumps Using Environmentaly Acceptable Hydraulic Fluids.

The main objective of this project is to improve the design and manufacturing process of high pressure external gear pumps in order to: a) make the pump compatible with environmentally acceptable hydraulic fluids (ecological oils), b) extend the service life of the pump for different operational levels, c) reduce noise effects. These objectives will be achieved by developing and validating new experimental procedures and computational models to asses the performance of gear pumps, ie.
- Computation of operating parameters and geometrical configurations of engaging teeth.
- Design of the optimum tooth form and manufacturing of a prototype pump.
- Selection of adequate ecological oils.
- Modelling the three dimensional flow of oil through the pump gears.
- Estimation of pump's sensitivity to ecological oils contaminated oils.
- Evaluation of the hydrodynamic noise level for different operational stages
- Estimating the pump's performance and life for different field conditions and oil types.

The outputs provided by the experimental and computational models developed will be the basis for defining "ad hoc" design guidelines to enhance the overall pump performance using ecological oils and minimize the noise level. It is expected that the new design methodology will reduce the time invested in prototype manufacturing of gear pumps by a factor of six, and that of experimental testing by a factor of two. The overall design cycle could be reduced in a 40%. A 10% reduction in energy consumption due to enhanced design is also expected. Moreover, 15% increase in world market share is envisaged due to enhanced low noise performance, versus vane and pistons Pumps widely used nowadays due to their better noise features. The results of the project will directly benefit the manufacturing industry fluid power in Europe. Moreover, the project outputs will also be applicable directly to all industrial sectors operating with environmentally acceptable oils such as valves, automatic devices for food handling, etc.

Following the successful completion of the project there are also a number of possibilities for technology transfer of the oil hydrodynamic and noise models developed in a number of industrial fields, i.e. automobile (engines, cooling systems, fuel pumps, hydraulic and Pneumatic breaks, etc.), aerospace (turbines), air-conditioning systems, heat exchangers, turbomachinery, air induction and exhaust systems, power steering systems, etc.

The project outputs will be the basis for the conception and production of a new generation of ecological and low noise gear pumps. The partners expect to complete the design and manufacturing of the first family of pumps within two year's period after completion of the project. These pumps could reach the market in the following two years.
