A model-based computerised system for management support to identify optimal remedial strategies for restoring radionuclide contamintaed aquatic ecosystems and drainage areas

Objectif



The aim of the project is to construct a model-based computerised system using cost-benefit analysis for the identification of optimal remedial strategies to restore radionuclide contaminated aquatic systems and drainage areas. Such a system can be a valuable, user-friendlysupport to decision makers in selecting cost efficient remedial actions to mitigate the effcts of radionuclide contamination of the environment. The system will be based on the utilisation of simple,validated, highly reliable generic models for predicting the migration of radionuclides in the environment,the effects of the countermeasures on the environmental contamination levels, the ecological, economical and social impacts of the countermeasures and the exposure to man. Such models will be driven by readly available environmental parameters. The cost-benefit analysis will be carried out by considering the total ecological, economical and social impact of countermeasures and the consequent benefits due to the reductions of doses to man. The study will lead to a software product that can be applied extensively in the EU, subject to the appropriate local characteristics of the environment and of the social and economical structures and organisations. General methods will be developed to rank, according to the cost-benefit analysis, various countermeasure strategies that can be applied in different contamination scenarios. The project will be based on general principles and processes that can also be usefully applied to other environmental contaminants.
