Agricultural reutilization of non-ferrous metal containing wastes from microelectronic and surface treating industry

Objectif

Foreseen Results

We believe that the realization of the project :

help to solve the problem of utilization of some kinds of hazardous wastes that in case of improper management may endanger the environment,
contributes to the elimination of plant nutrient deficiencies occurring at certain places,
promotes the production of more and especially better quality agricultural produce,
by the elimination of trace element deficiencies it improves the utilization of fertilizers. The more balanced nutrition of plants reduces the negative impact of fertilization on the environment,
it helps the production of cheaper element fertilizers,
it contributes to the rational management with mineral resources.
A large amount of non-ferrous metal, especially copper and zinc containing waste is formed especially in the microelectronic and surface treating industry in the European countries and all over the world as well.
Since the reutilization of these materials is rarely done they are in most of the cases placed and stored at different disposal sites where they may cause a tremendous load to the environment. A very important feature of these materials is that they are in many cases clean, contain just a few chemical elements and the reason why they should be treated as hazardous materials is that they are present in high concentration at one place.
In agriculture we can find large areas that are different in the elements in point and their application is necessary for plant nutritional purposes. In terms of agricultural reutilization it must be emphasized that there is a just aversion in agricultural people about the utilization of industrial wastes as a result of bad experiences in the past. Therefore our system would include a strict quality control. This quality control, the careful selection of the materials and the transformation processes we apply guarantee that the quality of the materials produced is always at least the same as that of available on the market.
In the framework of the project we find and select the materials suitable for reutilization and the same time we survey in all the participating countries the agricultural lands that are deficient in copper and zinc.
By the chemical transformation of the materials we produce new efficient trace element fertilizers with a chemical composition where the ligand is a source of plant nutrients as well.
During the transformation process by the preparation of new complex compounds and trace element containing zeolites we produce different slow release fertilizers that are more efficient in eliminating plant nutrient deficiencies.

The programme includes investigations for studying the effect of the compounds from different points of view. During the trials we study the effect on the yield, the chemical composition and the quality parameters of the crops produced. The different partners carry out plant nutritional and physiological studies as well in order to investigate to applicability of the compounds produced and their competitiveness compared to those ones available ont the market.
